The 614th Commandment is a darkly funny play in which two actors embodying multiple characters examine both the role of Holocaust history in contemporary Jewish identity and American- Jewish perspectives regarding Germany in the 21st century, all through a critical, absurdist lens.

The play is based on hundreds of interviews conducted with Jewish people of a variety of backgrounds in Los Angeles, California, and was inspired by Alissa’s experiences as an American Jewish woman living in Berlin. It premiered on June 2, 2016 as part of English Theatre Berlin | International Performing Arts Center’s 2016 Expat Expo | Immigrant Invasion: A Showcase of Wahlberliner.

The premiere of The 614th Commandment was produced by Alissa Rubinstein, directed by Adam Donald, and performed by Kellen York and Carrie Getman. Alissa created and ran an Indiegogo campaign to finance the production. She was interviewed about the project in Exberliner, Berlin’s premiere English-language news magazine, and it also got a brief mention in taz, a German newspaper.
